Cut, Collide, Critique

TRM 153: Assignment 2
Cut, Collide, Critique: The Mashed-Up Cut-Up
Critique: October 20

ASSIGNMENT:
Using Adobe Premiere CC, create a mashed-up cut-up of 3 or more appropriated video sources. The goal is to radically change their original message or meaning. You will have one (1) main source and two (2) additional sources. Your main source must comprise 75% (or more) of the content of your final project AND be non-fiction (ie: speeches, interviews, news, etc.).

You may use any other two sources for the remaining 25% (or less) of your video.

Your final mash/up cut up should be 2-3 minutes long. Plan carefully and thoughtfully.

You are responsible for both a radically altered video and audio track. Simply mashing up one audio track with one video track is insufficient. You must cut up both audio and video. They should be unrecognizable.

Your final video will be exported and uploaded to Vimeo.com [you will need to create a free account], as well as uploaded to your folder on the TRM server. You will be required to share your Adobe Premiere CC files in class as part of your critique. Please plan accordingly.

EVALUATION:
50% conceptual:
What are your ideas? How did your selection and edit of sources support or conflict with your intention or question? Does your edit offer new, contemporary insight or critique into your original source material? How clear is your message?

50% technical:
Is it clear you understand the software well enough to use it effectively? Did you learn lessons from the tutorials? Do you posses confidence in using the software to communicate your ideas?Does your technical approach support your concept? Do your technical or stylistic choices move your ideas forward?

RESOURCES:
Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/movies. HIGHLY RECOMMEND using the internet archive to find your source material. It is free and you can very easily download from the hundreds of thousands of moving image files on there. I recommend checking out the "Ephemeral Films" & "cultural and academic films" sections.

Savefrom.net: http://en.savefrom.net/
An excellent downloading tool. There are multiple ways to use this tool, consult "How to Use?" section on their website for more.

Download Helper: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/. Download helper is a plug-in for the firefox browser that will help you appropriate video and audio from you-tube like sites.
